Three-time Oscar-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver was honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice Film Festival, making her only the third American actress to receive this prestigious accolade. Known for iconic roles in the Alien and Avatar franchises, as well as other films like Gorillas In The Mist and Working Girl, Weaver appeared at the festival press conference with a mix of joy and emotion.
Weaver became tearful when discussing the impact her empowering roles have had on women, particularly in reference to the rise of Kamala Harris and the possibility of her becoming the US President. The actress expressed her excitement about Harris and the importance of representation in the current political climate.
Reflecting on her character of Ripley in the Alien franchise, Weaver emphasized the importance of portraying women as complete individuals and not conforming to gender stereotypes. She spoke about the evolution of female roles in Hollywood and how older women are now being written as more complex and realistic characters.
Weaver also touched on her tendency to portray strong female characters, stating that women are inherently strong and resilient. She humorously mentioned a backup plan of becoming a florist or a baker if her acting career didn’t work out, showcasing her down-to-earth personality.
The 81st Venice Film Festival will continue until September 7th, celebrating the lasting impact of Weaver’s contributions to the film industry and her portrayal of powerful, independent women on screen.
