Harris campaign initiates drive to boost Black voter turnout in Maine

State and local leaders gathered in Monument Square on Wednesday to launch Black Mainers for Harris-Walz, an effort by the Harris-Walz campaign to mobilize Black Mainers to vote. The event, attended by about 60 people, aimed to engage Black voters in Maine and highlight the diversity of voices in the state.

Maine House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross, co-chair of Black Mainers for Harris-Walz, emphasized the importance of electing leaders who value diversity and justice. She criticized Trump’s policies, which she believes would harm Black communities, and urged voters to support the Harris-Walz ticket.

Despite the lack of specific data on Black voter registrations in Maine, Talbot Ross stressed the significance of Black voices in the upcoming election. U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio also spoke at the event, urging people to register and vote in what she described as the most consequential election of our lifetimes.

Attendees like Angela Franklin Lord and Marcia Minter expressed their support for the Harris-Walz ticket, citing their positions on issues like reproductive rights and justice for all Americans. The launch of Black Mainers for Harris-Walz aimed to increase engagement and inclusion of Black voters in the political process in Maine.

Overall, the event focused on empowering Black Mainers to participate in the upcoming election and underscored the importance of diverse voices in shaping the future of the state and the country.
