The Met Office has announced the list of storm names for the upcoming 2024-5 season, paying tribute to notable figures from its history. The naming of storms began in 2015 and aims to facilitate communication of severe weather events. Storms receive names when they are likely to result in either amber or red warnings, with amber warnings indicating an increased likelihood of disruption and red warnings reserved for extreme cases.
The latest storm, Storm Lilian, marked the 12th storm of the previous season, reaching the furthest into the alphabet meteorologists have gone within a season. Winds of up to 70mph brought disruption to the north of England and parts of Wales, affecting travel, events, and causing power outages, among other issues.
The collaboration with Met Éireann and KNMI allows for consistency in naming storms within the UK and neighboring countries. Will Lang, head of situational awareness at the Met Office, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to weather and climate science services throughout history.
The full list of storm names for the 2024-5 season includes Ashley, Bert, Conall, Darragh, Eowyn, Floris, Gerben, Hugo, Izzy, James, Kayleigh, Lewis, Mavis, Naoise, Otje, Poppy, Rafi, Sayuri, Tilly, Vivienne, and Wren. These names will be used in the event of severe weather that could potentially impact communities across the UK.
