The University of Maine Black Bears are gearing up to kick off their 132nd season of football on Friday, August 30th at 7 p.m. The team will face off against Colgate at Alfond Stadium. Fans are encouraged to participate in a ‘Friday Night Lights’ edition of a Blue Out, where they can wear blue to cheer on the Black Bears.
In addition to the game, there will be various promotions and activities throughout the night, including the ‘Running of the Bears’ to welcome the Class of 2028, giveaways, and a postgame fireworks display. The Hannaford Kids Zone will also be open for children to enjoy fun activities before and during the game.
Maine is looking to start the season with a win, having not done so since 2019. The team returns 15 starters from last year, including graduate transfer quarterback Carter Peevy. The defense will be led by top tacklers Tyshawn Stewart, Xavier Holmes, and Izaiah Henderson.
Colgate, coming off a 6-5 season, will be looking to improve their performance in Patriot League action. The team features several Preseason All-Patriot League selections, including standout receiver Treyvhon Saunders. The Raiders will be looking to improve their defensive performance from last year.
A win for Maine would mark their third victory over Colgate, their first season opening win since 2019, and their first home opening win since 2021. The game will be broadcast live on various platforms for fans to enjoy.
