The National Park Service recently released a report showing that nearly 4 million visitors to Acadia National Park in 2023 spent $475 million in and around Bar Harbor, supporting 6,000 jobs and benefiting the wider Down East economy. While the spending was slightly down from 2022, it was significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Park Superintendent Kevin Schneider highlighted how Acadia’s landscape and recreational offerings draw visitors and support local businesses.
Despite a decrease in visitors from the previous year, Acadia’s 2023 numbers were still higher than the average from the previous decade, showing a strong rebound from the COVID-19 shutdown. The park service report also revealed that national park visitors across the U.S. spent $26.4 billion in nearby communities, supporting over 415,000 jobs and boosting the economy.
The lodging sector received the highest direct contributions from park visitors, with restaurants following closely behind. Park service Director Chuck Sams expressed pride in the positive impact that park visitors have on local economies and job creation across the country, emphasizing the lasting impact of national parks on the millions of visitors they attract each year.
Overall, the report demonstrates the continued economic significance of national parks like Acadia and the positive ripple effects they have on surrounding communities. The data underscores the importance of preserving and promoting these natural treasures for both recreational enjoyment and economic growth.
