Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the financial accounts of Elon Musk’s Starlink to be blocked as tensions between Musk and the Brazilian government escalate. The feud stems from censorship issues related to Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in Brazil.
Starlink confirmed receiving the order from Judge de Moraes, preventing the company from conducting financial transactions in Brazil. Musk has criticized the judge, calling him a criminal in response to the order. De Moraes’ decision is a reaction to the lack of legal representation for X in the country.
The judge has also ordered Musk to name a legal representative for X in Brazil within 24 hours or face the suspension of the platform in the country. X had previously announced it would close operations in Brazil due to what it perceived as censorship orders from de Moraes.
De Moraes has been cracking down on misinformation and disinformation, leading to the suspension of over 100 X accounts, some belonging to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Musk has accused the judge of stifling free speech and violating Brazil’s constitution.
The ongoing feud between Musk and de Moraes highlights the tensions surrounding censorship and freedom of speech in Brazil. The latest developments signal a potential escalation in the conflict between the billionaire and the Brazilian government.
