Lawrence High School senior Addison Battis is facing challenges as the field hockey field at her school remains unplayable after scheduled work was not completed. The field has bumps, weeds, dirt, and dead patches of grass, making it unfit for games. The team has been practicing at alternative locations, which has cost the program money and drained their funds. The district hired a company to work on the field, but the results were unsatisfactory. The school is now working with a new company to try to restore the field, but it is uncertain when it will be ready for play again.
Coach Shawna Robinson and senior Maddie Niles expressed frustration over the poor condition of the field and the lack of recognition for the team’s accomplishments, such as winning regional and Class B titles. Robinson highlighted the lack of banners in the gymnasium to showcase their achievements, despite efforts by the team to fundraise for their own recognition. The issue extends beyond the field to a lack of respect for the team.
Despite the obstacles, the Lawrence field hockey team remains resilient and determined to make the best of the situation. They are looking forward to the upcoming season and are focused on staying positive. The team’s first game is scheduled to be played at an alternative location, reflecting their adaptability in the face of adversity. Their perseverance and team spirit are evident as they navigate the challenges of having an unplayable home field.
