Serbia, under President Alexander Vučić, is seeking European Union membership but has faced challenges in meeting the preconditions related to rule of law and democratic reforms. However, in a move to strengthen ties with the EU, French President Emmanuel Macron has signed a deal to sell Serbia 12 Rafale fighter jets, breaking Belgrade’s dependence on Russian arms.
The deal was announced during Macron’s visit to Belgrade, where he praised Serbia for showing a “demonstration of European spirit.” Macron described the deal as “historic and important,” emphasizing a long-term alliance between France and Serbia within a stronger, more sovereign Europe. The contract, worth €2.7 billion, includes a complete logistical package with spare engines.
While Russia has traditionally been a supplier of military aircraft to Serbia, the Rafale deal signifies a shift towards Western alliances. This move comes amidst concerns about Serbia’s military build-up following the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and its aggressive stance towards Balkan neighbors.
Macron also stressed the importance of Serbia’s EU membership, urging the country to pursue democratic reforms and affirming the need for a strong and sovereign European Union. He warned that Serbia’s attempt to balance between world powers is an “illusion” and that joining the EU is vital for protecting its interests and identity.
Concerns have been raised about the potential sharing of Rafale technology with Russia, given Serbia’s historical ties to Moscow. The sale of the fighter jets highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region and the challenges faced by Serbia in navigating its relationships with both the EU and Russia.
