As the November elections approach, the control of the Maine House of Representatives and Senate for the next two years may come down to a few hundred votes in key battleground districts. The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram has identified several races that could determine the majority party in each chamber.
In the Senate, there are several competitive races to watch, including the District 1 seat held by Democratic Senate President Troy Jackson, which has been trending towards Republicans in recent elections. Democrats are also looking to flip the District 10 seat in Brewer, Bucksport, and Hampden.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats currently hold a 12-seat majority, but they are looking to regain at least one seat in Aroostook County and are engaged in several competitive races on the coast, including District 37 in Winterport and District 105 in Gray and North Yarmouth.
Other key battleground districts include District 45 in the Midcoast region, where Republican Abden Simmons is seeking reelection after flipping the seat in a special election. The Sebago Lake region is also expected to be a hotbed of competition, with Windham districts 106 and 107 featuring close races.
With ranked choice voting not being used in these races, the outcomes could be unpredictable in these closely contested districts. The races in these battleground districts will be closely watched as voters head to the polls in November to determine the makeup of Maine’s legislative chambers for the next two years.
