On September 12, Winthrop Society to host informative talk on the history of apples

Winthrop Nurse and Apple Enthusiast to Present Talk on Apples and Orchards

Kerry Anne Wilkins, a healthcare nurse and avid apple enthusiast in Winthrop, is set to present a talk titled “Histories and Mysteries — Apples and Apple Orchards of Winthrop, 1700s to the Present” on Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center. The event will focus on the historic apple orchards along Winthrop Center Road, South Road, and Narrows Pond Road, showcasing varieties such as the Longfellow Cathead, The Longfellow Russett, The Moses Wood, and The Fairbanks.

Wilkins has been researching the rich history of Winthrop apples and orchards, aiming to uncover forgotten orchardists and their locations from the past. The talk will be preceded by the second annual apple pie bake-off, where participants can bring their favorite apple pies for judging by a panel. Those interested in a Zoom option can email the society for the link, with the recording available on the Society’s YouTube Channel.

In case of inclement weather, the bake-off will be canceled. To RSVP or for more information, individuals can contact the Winthrop History and Heritage Center. Wilkins’ presentation promises to be a fascinating exploration of Winthrop’s apple legacy, combining history and mystery for an informative and engaging event for apple enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
