Labor Day weekend is a time for union members and allies to come together in Maine to celebrate victories, share struggles, and recommit to fighting for fair wages, safe working conditions, and a voice on the job. The Maine AFL-CIO believes that Vice President Kamala Harris is the best candidate to support workers and improve their livelihoods. Harris has a track record of passing labor reforms, such as the American Rescue Plan Act, which helped rescue troubled pensions for Maine workers in various industries.
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, supported by Harris, is creating job opportunities in clean energy, power, water infrastructure, and broadband. These projects will benefit communities and provide career opportunities for local workers with good wages and benefits. In addition, the act lowers prices on prescription drugs, including capping the price on life-saving insulin under Medicare.
In recent years, there has been a surge in union organizing and worksite actions, leading to major victories for workers across the nation. Public support for organized labor is at a high not seen since the 1960s, with 71% of Americans approving of unions. President Biden’s pro-union National Labor Relations Board has made organizing easier for workers and cracked down on illegal corporate union busting.
Despite progress, there is still work to do, as the percentage of workers belonging to a union has declined. Vice President Harris supports the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, which would improve the climate for union organizing. Harris has a history of standing up for low-paid workers and introducing legislation to protect domestic workers, extend overtime rights, and guarantee new minimum wage rights to agricultural workers. She has pledged to crack down on corporate price gougers and address the high costs of food and housing.
As income and wealth inequality continue to grow, working people are looking for a leader who will prioritize their needs and reject trickle-down economic policies. Harris’s record and pro-worker policies make her a strong choice for workers across America.
