James Darren, a key figure in sparking the 1960s surfing craze, passes away


Teen idol and actor James Darren, best known for his role in the film “Gidget,” passed away at 88 in Los Angeles. Darren, who also had a successful career as a television director, was remembered for his role as Moondoggie in the 1959 hit movie alongside Sandra Dee. His success with teen fans led to a recording contract, and he had several singles that reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Darren also appeared in two “Gidget” sequels and had a long television career, including a starring role in “T.J. Hooker” alongside William Shatner.

Born as James Ercolani in 1936, Darren grew up in South Philadelphia and knew from a young age that he wanted to be an entertainer. He started performing in local nightclubs at 14 and was eventually discovered by a talent scout in New York. Darren’s acting and singing career led to numerous television and film appearances, including roles in “The Time Tunnel” and “Fantasy Island.”

Despite his success in Hollywood, Darren remained close to his family. He had two sons with his first wife, Gloria, and later married Evy Norlund, with whom he had two more sons. Darren was also the godfather of Nancy Sinatra’s daughter, highlighting the close relationships he maintained throughout his life.

James Darren’s legacy as a talented actor and musician endures, with his work in films like “Gidget” and television shows like “T.J. Hooker” leaving a lasting impact on the entertainment industry. His charm and talent will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
