Female Coaches Break Barriers, Make Waves in Maine High School Boys Soccer
In a state where just two out of 127 high school varsity boys soccer teams had female head coaches in 2016, Maine has seen a significant increase in women taking on coaching roles. By 2022, the number had grown to four, and this fall, there will be 10 female head coaches in the state.
These women are challenging cultural norms and embracing their passion for soccer as they step into leadership roles traditionally held by men. With women now coaching 7.8% of varsity boys soccer teams in Maine, the state is ahead of the national average for female representation in boys sports coaching.
Hiring and promoting more women in coaching positions is a trend that is gaining momentum in Maine. Many of these new female coaches have a deep understanding of the game and a strong connection to their players, making them ideal candidates for their roles.
