Bath Iron Works (BIW), the largest employer in the Midcoast area, has partnered with the local YMCA to address the shortage of daycare options in the region. This issue has been a major challenge in recruiting workers with children to the shipyard.
The YMCA has acquired a property in Brunswick and plans to convert it into a 10-classroom childhood education center. This initiative aims to provide quality childcare that aligns with the schedules of BIW employees. BIW President Charles F. Krugh emphasized the importance of this partnership in supporting the needs of shipbuilders and enhancing the nation’s defense.
Although the exact investment amount was not disclosed, this is a multi-million dollar project with contributions from BIW, the Bath Area Family YMCA, and the U.S. Navy. The renovated building will offer modern classrooms for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, prioritizing the children of shipyard workers. Remaining slots will be opened to the community on a first-come, first-served basis.
The project will create 150 slots in the education center and an additional 30 at the YMCA in Bath, providing much-needed childcare support for working parents in the area. Rob Gray, CEO of the Bath Area Family YMCA, emphasized the essential role of childcare programs in supporting the local economy and working families.
This collaborative effort between BIW and the YMCA demonstrates a commitment to addressing the childcare needs of employees and the community, ultimately contributing to the growth and success of the region.
