A man was arrested for operating a boat under the influence after running it aground on Vinalhaven. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when Maine Marine Patrol received a report of a boat running aground on Seal Ledge on the southwest side of the island in Penobscot Bay. The boat, named Holly and Abby and owned by Fox Island Lobster Co., was found lying on its side and taking in water.
Jared Larsen, 32, of Waldoboro, was identified as the suspected boat operator and was later found at the Rockland Fish Pier. He was taken to Knox County Jail and issued a summons for operating the watercraft under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
The vessel had roughly 80-100 gallons of diesel fuel on board, presenting a potential environmental hazard. Efforts are currently underway to prevent any leakage and salvage the vessel. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of operating a boat under the influence and the potential consequences that may result.
