The United States has introduced new export controls on quantum computers and semiconductor-manufacturing equipment as part of efforts to limit the use of advanced technologies by rivals like China. The US Department of Commerce stated that these restrictions were implemented after consulting with international partners and are aimed at strengthening relationships with like-minded countries.
Under Secretary for the Bureau of Industry and Security Alan Estevez emphasized that these controls will make it harder for adversaries to develop and deploy technologies that threaten collective security. The US has been taking steps to curb China’s tech industry with restrictions on advanced chips and related equipment, and has urged allied countries to do the same.
Following the US’s lead, the Netherlands announced tighter controls on exports of semiconductor-making machines, citing increased security risks in the current geopolitical context. Other countries, including Japan, have also implemented restrictions on advanced chip-making equipment to limit China’s access to semiconductor technology.
In response to these moves, China has ramped up efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in advanced chips and criticized the US for disrupting global supply chains. Despite US efforts, a recent analysis by TechanaLye showed that Chinese-made chips are only slightly behind industry leaders like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd.
Overall, the US’s export controls on quantum computers and semiconductor-manufacturing equipment are part of a broader strategy to restrict China’s access to advanced technologies and maintain its global technological dominance.
