Dwayne Fields, the first Black Briton to reach the Magnetic North Pole and a prominent explorer, has been named as the 11th Chief Scout of the Scouting Association in the UK. The Chief Scout is a ceremonial figurehead of the global youth movement that teaches outdoor skills to children. Fields follows in the footsteps of Bear Grylls, the previous Chief Scout, who used his background in the SAS to become a survival expert on television.
Fields’ appointment is significant as he is the first Black person to hold the role in the organization’s 117-year history. Born in Jamaica and raised in London, Fields found a sense of belonging in the Scouts after facing tribulations in his youth. He hopes to use his position to grow the Scout movement in the UK and encourage at-risk youth to unlock their potential.
Fields’ own journey to the Magnetic North Pole in 2010 was a testament to his adventurous spirit and determination. He was awarded The Freedom of the City of London and met the Queen at Buckingham Palace for his achievement. Fields believes that his story can inspire others from similar backgrounds to see themselves in him and realize that scouting is for everyone.
With his unique background and passion for youth development, Dwayne Fields is set to bring a fresh perspective to the role of Chief Scout and lead the Scouts into a new era of inclusivity and opportunity.
