Local documentary filmmaker Ben Levine will be showcasing his early video work at Maine Media College in Rockport on September 19. Levine, a member of a 1970s video art collective, captured conversations in New York City, teenagers discussing disabilities (later featured in the award-winning film “Crip Camp”), and urban crime feedback. The program will also feature footage from Central Maine’s back-to-the-land movement in the 1970s and 80s, including forest homesteading and glimpses of 4th of July parades in West Athens. Additionally, footage from the experimental music group Central Maine Power Music Co. will be shown, where musicians and techies created images from sounds at the Hayden Planetarium in Boston.
The show, titled “The Promise,” will include recently digitized footage that hasn’t been seen in over 50 years. A discussion with Levine will follow the video presentation, with free entrance for all attendees. For more information, contact ben@speakingplace.org.
This unique showcase offers a glimpse into the early work of a talented filmmaker and highlights important moments in history through a creative lens. Don’t miss this opportunity to see rare footage and engage in a conversation with the artist behind it all.
