2024 US Elections Update: Harris and Trump Tied in Polls Before Debate as DoJ Issues Voter Purge Warning

A new report released by Pew Research Center on Monday shows a dead heat between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in the polls, with both candidates receiving 49% of the vote if the election were held today. One notable change is that Trump’s advantage on ‘mental sharpness’ has disappeared, with more voters now viewing Harris as mentally sharp compared to Trump. Less than two months before the November election, both candidates bring contrasting strengths and weaknesses to the presidential contest. Biden administration finalized a regulation to ensure access to affordable mental health services for Americans with private health insurance. This comes after reports of low access to mental health care due to insufficient coverage by insurance plans. The Justice Department issued a fact-sheet warning states about the illegality of purging voters from the rolls within 90 days of a federal election, amid reports of voter purges in several Republican-led states. In response to a proposal linking government funding with proof of citizenship when registering to vote, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries deemed it “unserious and unacceptable”, setting the stage for a spending battle in Congress. With the upcoming presidential debate between Harris and Trump, both campaigns are focusing on key issues such as abortion rights and gun violence prevention. Kamala Harris is set to have a digital rally hosted by Oprah Winfrey on September 19 to garner support for her campaign.
