Authorities continue search for evidence in five unsolved homicides in Aroostook County

Justice continues to elude the victims of five unsolved homicides in Aroostook County, Maine. Among these cases are the murders of Kenneth Zernicke in Caribou, Louis Alexander and Joseph Savitch in Masardis, Lila Drew in Masardis, and Darrel Smith in Woodland near Caribou. Despite the passage of time, authorities, families, and friends remain hopeful that new information or leads will come to light to bring closure to these cases.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North, led by Lt. Darrin Crane, is urging the public to come forward with any relevant information. With the anniversary of Kenneth Zernicke’s death approaching, authorities hope to bring renewed attention to the case in the hopes of finally solving it. Zernicke’s brother, Joseph Bourgoine, has offered a $10,000 reward for information on his brother’s death.

The Masardis homicides of Louis Alexander and Joseph Savitch, as well as the murder of Lila Drew, remain unsolved despite being notorious cases in the area. Similarly, the killing of Darrel Smith and Anthony Bear also continue to be unsolved mysteries. While newer cases like Zernicke’s may have a better chance of being solved, the passage of time and loss of potential witnesses make it increasingly challenging to gather new evidence.

Advancements in technology have helped solve older cases, as seen in the recent arrest of a woman linked by DNA to the death of an infant found in a Frenchville gravel pit in 1985. For now, authorities are urging anyone with information on any of the unsolved cases in Aroostook County to come forward and assist in bringing justice to the victims and closure to their families.
