Supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan gathered on the outskirts of Islamabad on Sunday to demand his release after more than a year of detainment. Khan, the main political rival to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, faces over 150 police cases, which government critics claim are politically motivated. Ousted from office in 2022, Khan remains a popular figure in Pakistan. The peaceful rally, one of the largest this year held by Khan’s PTI party, saw some activists briefly clashing with police. Key roads were blocked by authorities using shipping containers to prevent supporters from attending. Khan’s spokesman denounced the police action, and officials at the rally expressed confidence in securing his release soon. Imran Khan has been in prison since 2023, following his arrest and sentencing in a corruption case. The rally highlighted the continued support for Khan and his party, with demands for justice and political freedom for the former Prime Minister.
