Maine Sees Surge in Voter Registrations Ahead of November Election
As the November election approaches, Maine is experiencing a surge in voter registrations, with close to 23,000 new registrations so far this year, including over 5,400 in August alone. This increase in registrations comes as residents like Ralph Hodgkins, Julie Chandler, and Orin Edwards are making their voices heard by registering to vote for the first time or changing their party affiliation.
Hodgkins, 91, recently moved back to Maine after living in Florida for over three decades. He registered as a Republican and plans to support Donald Trump in the upcoming election, citing Trump’s tough stance on immigration and conservative views as reasons for his support.
Chandler, on the other hand, registered as a Democrat and plans to cast her ballot for Kamala Harris in November. She got involved in politics this year due to the importance of current issues and the desire to have a voice in shaping the country’s future.
Edwards, who recently moved to Maine from North Carolina to be closer to family, also registered as a Democrat and plans to support Harris. He expressed concerns about Donald Trump as a candidate and believes the Republican party needs to address issues within its ranks.
The Maine Department of the Secretary of State has not tracked new voter registrations by demographics or party affiliation, but the surge in registrations is likely influenced by excitement around Harris joining the Democratic ticket in July. Overall, the increased interest in voter registration reflects a broader trend of civic engagement among Maine residents as they gear up for the upcoming election.
