The last-minute change in Slovenia’s Commissioner nominees has caused a public dispute between Prime Minister Robert Golob and the opposition party SDS. Golob accuses the opposition of sabotage, while SDS claims it is about respecting procedures. The original nominee, Tomaž Vesel, resigned, and Marta Kos was named as a replacement candidate. However, the opposition chair refused to schedule Kos’ hearing until he received a letter from Ursula von der Leyen, causing a delay in the process.
Golob hoped to settle the matter in time for von der Leyen’s portfolio reveal, but the delay could further postpone it. This has led to criticism of Golob’s handling of the situation, with opposition leader Janez JanÅ¡a calling it a “shame” and accusing the government of damaging Slovenia’s reputation.
There are concerns about Kos’ suitability for the position, with accusations of pro-Kremlin stances and issues during her time as an ambassador. The opposition claims that even if she receives approval from the parliamentary committee, she may not get the backing of the Slovenian delegation in the European Parliament.
Despite attempts to repair the relationship between Golob and Kos, the situation remains fraught. Golob has refrained from commenting on the appointment process until it is complete. The ongoing dispute highlights the political tensions and power struggles within Slovenia’s government and opposition parties.
