Israel strikes UN-operated school in Gaza, claiming civilian casualties in ongoing conflict with Palestine

Israeli military strikes on a school housing displaced Palestinians in central Gaza killed at least 18 people, including six UNRWA staff members, sparking condemnation from various countries and UN agencies. The UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini described the ongoing violence as “endless and senseless killing.” This attack adds to the 220 UNRWA employees who have died in Gaza.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for an end to the carnage in Gaza, stating that the repeated bombings of hospitals, schools, and shelters have resulted in civilian and humanitarian deaths. Many school buildings in Gaza have been repurposed to shelter displaced families amid the ongoing conflict, with Israeli forces claiming that Hamas operates from these locations.

The Israeli military defended the strike on the al-Jaouni compound, stating that it was a “precise strike” on a Hamas command and control center. They claimed to have taken steps to minimize civilian casualties. However, this attack is just one in a series of bombings on schools sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza.

The ongoing violence in Gaza has caused significant loss of life and destruction, with civilians and humanitarians paying the price. The international community continues to call for an end to the bloodshed and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
