OpenAI Plans to Release AI Models with ‘Human-Like’ Reasoning Abilities

OpenAI has announced the launch of its “Strawberry” series of AI models, designed to excel at solving complex problems in science, coding, and math. The models, known internally as o1 and o1-mini, are now available in ChatGPT and its API, with improved performance compared to previous models.

Noam Brown, a researcher at OpenAI, confirmed that these models are part of the Strawberry project aimed at enhancing general reasoning capabilities in AI. The o1 model achieved an impressive 83% score on the qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, significantly outperforming its predecessor, GPT-4o.

Utilizing a technique called “chain-of-thought” reasoning, the models can break down challenging problems into smaller logical steps, resulting in enhanced problem-solving abilities. This approach, previously used as a prompting technique to improve AI model performance, has now been automated by OpenAI.

The company claims that these models are trained to carefully consider problems before responding, similar to human thinking processes. They are taught to refine their decision-making strategies, experiment with different approaches, and learn from their mistakes over time.

By incorporating these advancements in reasoning capabilities, OpenAI aims to push the boundaries of AI capabilities in tackling difficult tasks across various domains. The introduction of the Strawberry series signals a significant step forward in AI development, promising more robust problem-solving solutions in the future.
