Brazil Supreme Court Releases X and Starlink’s Bank Accounts After $3 Million Transfer | Social Media Update

Billionaire Elon Musk has criticized the ban on his social media company X in Brazil, where the platform failed to comply with court orders. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes recently unfroze the bank accounts of X and Musk’s satellite internet company Starlink after they paid over $3m in fines owed. Musk, who owns both companies, called de Moraes an “evil dictator” after X was banned for spreading misinformation and failing to name a legal representative in Brazil. The decision to penalize both X and Starlink, despite the companies being separate entities, has raised questions among legal analysts. Musk has a history of promoting far-right conspiracy theories and false claims, including supporting supporters of Brazil’s former leader, Jair Bolsonaro, who spread unfounded election fraud allegations. Bolsonaro was barred from holding office until 2030 after his supporters called for a military coup and stormed the country’s legislature. Although Musk has criticized liberal governments for restricting false information on X, he has complied with requests from right-wing governments to remove content. In 2023, X agreed to block access to a BBC documentary in India following a request from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Musk stated that they would comply with the country’s laws to avoid legal issues.
