More accusations of sexual abuse surface against French priest Abbé Pierre in France

The Catholic church in France has announced that it will open its records on allegations of sexual abuse and harassment made against a priest, Abbé Pierre, who was once venerated as a modern-day saint for his work with the poor and homeless. The Conference of Bishops of France made this decision following accusations by seven women of sexual assault, as well as additional testimonies of sexual abuse on multiple victims, including children.

The Abbé Pierre Foundation, Emmaüs France, and Emmaüs International expressed shock at the seriousness of the allegations and voiced their support for the victims. The organizations are taking steps to distance themselves from their founder, including changing their names and potentially removing Abbé Pierre’s name from their logo.

A report by an independent consultancy revealed disturbing details of the alleged abuse, dating back to the 1950s and occurring in multiple countries. The accusations include forced sexual acts, contact with a child, and disturbing encounters such as forcing a woman to watch the priest masturbate and perform oral sex.

Emmaüs International is now considering how to compensate the victims and is urging its branches to reevaluate the role of Abbé Pierre in their organizations. The Catholic church has pledged full cooperation in the investigation and expressed pain and shame over the accusations. This scandal is part of a broader issue within the church, as a recent report identified thousands of cases of sexual abuse by priests since 1950.

The Abbé Pierre Foundation, Emmaüs France, and Emmaüs International have all expressed their support for the victims and are taking steps to address the allegations against their founder.
