Solheim Cup 2024: Follow Along Live on Day One

The Solheim Cup got off to a difficult start for Europe, both on and off the course. USA took a 6-2 lead after dominant performances in foursomes and fourballs on Day One. Nelly Korda shone with two wins, as did other US players like Rose Zhang, Lauren Coughlin, and Sarah Schmelzel.

European captain Suzann Pettersen acknowledged the tough task ahead and acknowledged some errors made by the team. Vice captain Mel Reid highlighted the need for team improvement and strategy adjustments.

Despite some positives for Europe, including strong performances from Anna Nordqvist, Emily Pedersen, and Maja Stark, the US team’s lead was record-breaking at 6-2 after the first day. This left Europe facing an uphill battle to turn the tide in subsequent sessions.

Key moments included Nelly Korda’s stellar play, including an eagle and consistent putting, as well as solid performances from US rookies like Schmelzel and Coughlin. The Swedish duo of Nordqvist and Sagstrom also played well, staying competitive with their American opponents.

Overall, the first day of the Solheim Cup saw the US team establishing a significant lead, with Europe facing a challenging task ahead to comeback in the following sessions. The strong performance of US players, particularly Korda, set the tone for the competition and made for an intense opening day of play.
