DeSantis announces investigation into apparent Trump assassination attempt in Florida

Florida officials have launched a state-level criminal investigation into the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Ryan Wesley Routh, who was charged with federal firearms offenses, will also face attempted murder charges under Florida law. The parallel investigation allows both state and federal agencies to pursue appropriate charges based on their respective laws.

The FBI has been working to gather evidence, including interviews with the suspect’s family and colleagues, as well as seeking search warrants for electronic devices and other materials. Routh was arrested after being spotted carrying a rifle near a golf course where Trump was playing. He was apprehended before being able to harm the former president, and no shots were fired.

In addition to the federal charges Routh currently faces, including illegal possession of a firearm, prosecutors may bring further charges as the investigation progresses. Routh has a history of felony convictions, and investigators are also looking into his online activities and writings, which suggest evolving political views and a disdain for Trump.

Vice President Kamala Harris reached out to Trump to express her gratitude for his safety, while Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody will oversee the state’s prosecution of the case. The incident has raised concerns about violence in American presidential politics, coming shortly after a previous shooting incident at a campaign rally.

Routh remains in federal custody and is scheduled for further hearings later this month. The investigation into his motives and actions continues, with authorities taking the matter very seriously and committing all available resources to the case.
