Navigating Pemaquid Point’s foggy waters by paddle presents a challenging adventure

An adventurous kayaker recently fulfilled a decades-long dream of navigating around Pemaquid Point in Maine. Ron Chase, an experienced sea kayaker, reminisced about childhood memories of visiting the area with his family in the 1950s.

Deciding to tackle the challenge while he was still physically able, Chase carefully planned the trip with a small group of friends, taking into account wind conditions and the tides. Despite starting the day with dense fog, the group pressed on with optimism, eventually embarking on their journey around the point.

Navigating through calm seas and a light headwind, the kayakers encountered patchy fog that obscured the anticipated views of the rocky coastline. As they rounded the point and faced choppy seas and erratic swells, they realized the forecasted conditions were not as favorable as expected.

Despite the challenging conditions, the group persevered, enjoying a rest on a sandy beach in Long Cove before completing their nearly 14-mile journey in Round Pond. While the trip was not without its obstacles, Chase described the experience as a long-held goal accomplished.

Chase’s adventure is chronicled in his book, “Maine Al Fresco: The Fifty Finest Outdoor Adventures in Maine,” which includes other coastal kayaking excursions in the region. For Chase, the journey around Pemaquid Point was not only a physical feat but a nostalgic return to cherished memories from his childhood.
