The town of Trenton, Maine has extended a moratorium on medium- and large-scale solar energy system development for another 180 days. This decision was made during a quick 10-minute meeting of the town’s select board. The current moratorium expires on October 5 and has been extended until the town adopts an amendment addressing solar developments.
Three solar farms are already in progress under the town’s existing ordinance, covering approximately 60 acres of land. The decision to extend the moratorium comes after residents rejected proposed changes to allow larger solar farms in residential districts.
The original moratorium was imposed after a developer proposed a 70-megawatt solar farm near the town’s industrial park, which would have cleared approximately 300 acres of land. The town has previously had moratoriums in 2020 to create regulations for small, medium, and large solar projects.
A working group, including Selectman Charles Farley and six citizens, has been created to address solar energy projects. A workshop on solar is scheduled for October 2 at the Trenton Town Office.
