VIDEO: Hungary prepares for potentially the most severe floods in ten years

Hungary remains on high alert for flooding as Storm Boris heads south, with Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony warning of the potential for the biggest flood of the decade. The Danube water levels are expected to crest at 8.5 metres near the city, prompting flood defence measures along 540 kilometres of Hungary’s rivers. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán approved the opening of an emergency reservoir along the Leitha river and implemented a third-degree alert along 200 kilometres of the country’s rivers. Traffic restrictions have been put in place in Gyor-Moson-Sopron and Komárom-Esztergom counties bordering the Danube, as well as in the Danube bend area. International train services between Hungary and Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany will also be affected. The government is taking precautions to ensure the safety of citizens and minimize damage from potential flooding. Stay updated on the situation by watching the video above.
