Waterville City Council Denies Renewal of Marijuana Retail License

Waterville City Councilors voted unanimously to reject the renewal of a retail marijuana license for Bobby Buds on College Avenue following numerous complaints from neighbors. The complaints included loud music, public disturbances, harassment, and abusive language. Despite the licensee, Jennifer Dunham’s absence, her husband, Robert Dunham, urged the council to approve the renewal, stating they had not broken any laws or ordinances.

However, neighbors, including Debra Pullen, spoke out against the business, citing disruptive behavior such as blasting loud music that affected the entire neighborhood. Councilors were also concerned about the pattern of not heeding requests to turn down the music and the absence of Jennifer Dunham at the meeting.

The council ultimately voted 6-0 against renewing the license, citing the detrimental impact of Bobby Buds on the neighborhood’s well-being. The decision followed a petition from neighbors and detailed accounts of noise, harassment, and domestic disturbances associated with the business over the past 18 months.

Police Chief Bill Bonney did not approve of renewing the license, and the state license for Bobby Buds is also pending renewal pending the council’s decision. City Clerk Patti Dubois sent the matter to the council due to the complaints raised and Bonny’s disapproval.

Overall, the city made the decision to reject the license renewal for Bobby Buds based on the numerous complaints from neighbors and the impact of the business on the community’s quality of life. The business will not be allowed to operate beyond the expiration of its current city license in November.
