AMG Lithium has recently opened Europe’s first lithium refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany. The refinery, built in just over two years at a cost of 140 million euro, is set to produce 20,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year. This quantity is enough to power around 500,000 electric vehicles annually. Lithium is a crucial component in electric vehicle batteries and is in high demand due to the global shift towards green energy. Most of the plant’s lithium will be sourced from Brazil, with plans to eventually produce lithium from European mines as well. The European Union has taken steps to reduce reliance on external sources of supply for critical raw materials, such as lithium. Managing Director of AMG Lithium, Stefan Scherer, highlighted the importance of lithium-ion batteries for achieving high performance and range in electric vehicles. The opening of this refinery marks a significant step towards meeting the increasing demand for lithium in the automotive industry as the world moves towards sustainable transportation options.
