Maine Republicans have launched a major ad buy targeting Democrats in four state Senate races in Windham, Auburn, Augusta, and Orono. The $67,000 worth of digital attack ads target two incumbents and two candidates running for open seats. The ads focus on issues such as high property taxes and electricity prices, linking the Democrats to these problems.
The decision to repeal a senior property tax stabilization program is a key point in the ads, as well as the support for solar farms that contribute to high electricity prices. Republicans believe these races are their most competitive and are aiming to win back key seats in the Senate.
Despite the high spending on ads, overall political spending on legislative races this year has been relatively quiet compared to past years. Democrats currently control both the House and Senate by wide margins, and Republicans would need a strong showing in November to upset the balance of power.
The Maine Labor Climate political action committee has also been active in supporting Democratic candidates with direct mailers. The next round of campaign finance reports are due soon, which will provide a more comprehensive look at spending by both candidates and outside groups.
Overall, the ad buy by Maine Senate Republicans signals their focus on key races and their efforts to gain ground in the upcoming election. Democrats maintain a funding advantage, but Republicans are increasing their spending in hopes of securing crucial seats in the Senate.
