The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team is preparing for the upcoming season with a mix of veteran players and newcomers. Led by third-year head coach Molly Engstrom, the team will have 16 freshmen and sophomores on its roster when they open the season against the University of New Hampshire.
Despite losing their top three point-getters from last season, including All-Hockey East first team selection Ida Kuoppala, the Black Bears are optimistic about the upcoming campaign. Second-year captain Elise Morphy and senior forward Mira Seregely are confident that the new players will bring a lot to the team and help fill the scoring void.
With several returning players who have reached double digits in points, including Hockey East Rookie of the Month Sam Morrison, the Black Bears are looking to improve on their 15-18-2 record from last season. The team has high expectations and is aiming to achieve milestones that no Maine team has accomplished before, such as winning a Hockey East regular-season title or qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
To help lead the team, Engstrom will be assisted by new coaching staff addition McKenna Wesloh. With a strong mix of experienced veterans and talented newcomers, the Black Bears are eager to hit the ice and start their quest for success in the upcoming season.
