The European Parliament has voted to recognize Venezuela’s exiled presidential candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, as the legitimate and democratically elected President of Venezuela. This symbolic resolution marks the first time since the European elections in June that mainstream conservatives have united with the far right on an issue. The joint initiative was supported by the center-right European People’s Party (EPP), the hard-right European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), and the far-right Patriots for Europe.
The resolution, which has no legal weight, was passed with 309 votes in favor, driving a wedge through the pro-European coalition of centrist groups in the parliament. The voting records published by the Venezuelan opposition suggest that González won the presidential vote by a landslide in July, a claim supported by a United Nations report. Despite this, member states have not recognized him as the legitimate president until the official breakdown of the election results is published by the Venezuelan electoral council.
González, who has been granted political asylum in Spain, was also recognized as the legitimate president by the Spanish parliament. However, the socialist government led by Pedro Sánchez has refrained from declaring González as Venezuela’s legitimate president, leading to criticism.
The tension between the Venezuelan regime and the EU has escalated, particularly after Maduro’s contested re-election. This issue has caused turmoil within the EU and has prompted discussions regarding the recognition of González as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
