Former opposing players Taylor Makar, Owen Fowler, and Ross Mitton are now eagerly anticipating a season with the University of Maine’s hockey team, excited to have the cheering fans on their side. The trio, all forwards, have experienced the intensity of playing at Alfond Arena as opponents, including heckling from the crowd. Now, they are looking forward to being cheered on by the fans instead.
The players have been working hard over the summer, attending training sessions and bonding with their new teammates in Orono. Makar, brother of NHL star Cale Makar, expressed his joy at the opportunity to improve alongside his teammates. Similarly, Fowler appreciated the quieter campus atmosphere at Maine compared to his previous university. Mitton mentioned the change in team culture, noting that UMaine places a greater emphasis on hockey along with academics.
The players have also been enjoying their downtime, with Makar and Mitton bonding over fishing trips on the Penobscot River, while Fowler indulges in golfing. Despite high expectations following last year’s successful season, the trio is confident in the team’s potential, aiming for a national championship. With a lineup of strong players and supportive coaches, they are excited to see what the upcoming season has in store. Maine fans can look forward to seeing these former foes turned friends on the ice, ready to represent the Black Bears with pride.
