Bangor High School midfielders Teagan Atherley and Clara Oldenburg led the Class A North Rams to a 5-0 victory over previously undefeated in-town rival John Bapst. Atherley, a senior committed to play at the University of Maine, scored a hat trick, while Oldenburg, a junior, contributed a goal and an assist. Bangor, the defending Class A North titlist, improved to 4-1, while John Bapst fell to 3-1.
The duo controlled the midfield, showcasing strong technique and tenacity, as well as contributing defensively. Atherley’s goals put Bangor ahead, with Oldenburg and others contributing assists. Despite a solid effort from John Bapst, Bangor’s skill and work rate proved too much.
Both teams showed promise, with John Bapst goalkeeper Grace Bouchard making several key saves and Bangor’s defense holding firm. The Crusaders’ Claire Gaetani had good chances, but Bangor’s Eva Coombs was equal to the task. A rematch is scheduled for October 16.
Bangor will face Oxford Hills, while John Bapst will take on Ellsworth, in their upcoming matches. Coach Greg Bennett praised his team’s effort and looks forward to the rematch. The game highlighted the talent and determination of both teams, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
