Owner of damaged Waterville restaurant reports hit-and-run incident under investigation by police

Police are investigating a hit-and-run incident that occurred early Friday morning in Waterville when a car crashed into Mezza, a Lebanese restaurant on Temple Street. The owner of the restaurant, Tom Nale Sr., said the vehicle hit the entrance to the gas line, causing significant damage to the building. The crash forced business operators Jim Veilleux and Melissa Grant to temporarily shut down the restaurant, with hopes of reopening by Wednesday.

Nale, a retired lawyer and former Waterville mayor, stated that video footage of the incident clearly shows the license plate and occupants of the car involved. The impact of the crash destroyed the interior wall, stove, and other kitchen equipment, severing the gas line to the oven. The total damage is estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.

Despite the setback, Veilleux and Grant decided to donate 75 pounds of food that was inside the restaurant to those in need after the incident. Nale expressed concern about a potential gas leak following the crash, but fortunately, no explosion occurred. The community has shown an outpouring of support for the restaurant owners in light of the situation.

Authorities from Summit Natural Gas of Maine, Waterville police, and firefighters responded to the scene, but no official statement has been released regarding the investigation. Nale plans to assist Veilleux and Grant in reopening the restaurant and ensuring that they receive the necessary support during this challenging time.
