Israel’s military has intensified its attacks on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, warning civilians to avoid areas with Hezbollah presence. The Israeli army has reported launching over 300 strikes in Lebanon in response to Hezbollah’s missile attacks into northern Israel. The increased hostilities have raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant called for public calm as the military broadened its assault, aiming to allow evacuated Israelis to return safely home. The army spokesperson warned residents in southern Lebanon to leave areas near Hezbollah positions, and phone warnings have been received across the country advising evacuation.
Lebanon has accused Israel of psychological warfare through phone warnings and airstrikes, with Hezbollah vowing an “open-ended battle of reckoning” following recent attacks on its commanders. White House spokesperson John Kirby urged for a diplomatic solution while cautioning Israel on its response.
The cross-border fire exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated significantly, with both parties engaging in heavy attacks. Israel’s shift in focus towards Hezbollah comes after explosions in Beirut killed dozens and a senior Hezbollah commander was targeted in a strike. The situation remains tense, with concerns of a full-scale war looming.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, technically at war, involves daily skirmishes and attacks since October. Lebanon prohibits communications with Israel, and the recent escalation has prompted fears of a wider conflict in the region.
