Local Catholics Discuss Voting Choices in Upcoming Election
In a recent series of articles in this newspaper, two members of St. Michael’s Parish have been sharing their differing views on whether Catholics should consider voting for Democrats this fall. Frank O’Hara argues in favor, while Pat Truman disagrees.
Despite their contrasting opinions, O’Hara and Truman are longtime friends who have a deep connection. They both prioritize their Catholic faith above political affiliations and are actively engaged in their church community. O’Hara even writes his op-ed from a hospital bed where he values the prayers and support sent by Truman.
To further explore the intersection of politics and faith, St. Michael’s Parish Social Justice Commission is hosting an event titled “Politics aside, the conversation we need to have” on Saturday, Sept. 28. Featuring prominent Catholic ethicists and leaders, the event aims to foster a higher level of public dialogue and unity among various religious groups.
The program, taking place at St. Michael’s gym in Augusta, is open to all interested individuals of any faith background. The event will kick off with a prayer by Bishop James Ruggieri and include discussions led by experts from Catholic Charities USA and the Diocese of Portland.
While O’Hara won’t be able to attend, he encourages others to participate and engage with individuals such as Pat and Michelle Truman, who will be present at the event. This unique opportunity for community dialogue promises to provide valuable insights and perspectives on the role of religion in shaping political choices.
