Japanese fighter jets release flares at Russian aircraft for the first time during airspace violation in Japan.

Japan recently stated that its fighter jets used flares for the first time to warn a Russian reconnaissance aircraft to leave its airspace, marking the first publicly announced airspace incursion by a Russian aircraft since June 2019. The incident occurred above Rebun Island, just off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island. The Russian II-38 maritime patrol aircraft allegedly ignored radio warnings and breached Japanese airspace multiple times during a five-hour flight.

Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara called the airspace violation “extremely regrettable.” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed officials to respond “firmly and calmly.” The use of flares was deemed a legitimate response, with plans for future use without hesitation.

The incident comes amid escalating tensions caused by increasing military cooperation between Russia and China in the region. The day before the airspace violation, a joint fleet of Chinese and Russian warships sailed around Japan’s northern coast. Japanese defense officials are concerned about the implications of this military collaboration on their security strategy.

Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force had to scramble jets 669 times between April 2023 and March 2024, predominantly in response to Chinese military aircraft. This includes an instance where a Chinese Y-9 reconnaissance aircraft briefly violated Japanese airspace.

The territorial dispute over the Northern Territories and Japan’s support for Ukraine have further strained relations between Japan and Russia. The ongoing tension has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty formally ending hostilities. Japan has offered support to Ukraine through financial aid, material support, and sanctions on Russian individuals and organizations.
