EU Governments Approve Increased Hunting and Culling of Wolves

Conservationists have expressed outrage over a recent decision by EU governments to propose easing protections for wolf populations across Europe. The move, which would allow for the culling or hunting of wolves, was approved by all but two countries – Ireland and Spain. The decision to downgrade the status of wolves under the Bern Convention on wildlife conservation has been met with criticism from environmental groups, who see it as a betrayal of Europe’s biodiversity.

Green groups have condemned the decision, calling it a capitulation to populist fear-mongering campaigns and a disregard for scientific facts. The move has raised concerns about Europe’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, especially in the lead-up to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity conference in Colombia.

On the other hand, the European People’s Party has welcomed the decision, citing the need to address the increasing threat posed by wolf populations to farming, tourism, and rural communities. The European Commission has also supported the agreement, emphasizing that member states must maintain a favorable conservation status for wolves even after the change in designation.

Despite the backlash from environmentalists, farming lobby group Copa-Cogeca has endorsed the decision, praising the EU institutions for considering the needs of farmers and rural residents. The proposal is expected to be tabled at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention in December.
