Maine Senators Collins and King Celebrate National Lobster Day
Fall has arrived in Maine, bringing with it the changing colors of the leaves and the celebration of National Lobster Day on Wednesday. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King have been championing this iconic Maine export for 10 years, and this year, they were joined by senators from Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Florida in sponsoring legislation to recognize the day.
The resolution, which was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate, encourages Americans to celebrate National Lobster Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. The senators emphasized the importance of lobster fishing in Maine, stating that it is synonymous with the state’s identity, history, and culture. Lobster fishing not only contributes hundreds of millions to the state’s economy but also provides a sense of pride to its people.
The resolution also highlights the industry’s sustainability efforts and the versatility of lobster as a source of lean protein that can be found in various dishes like pho, tacos, gnocchi, cocktails, ice cream, and butter. Lobsters have even become mascots for sports teams and can be found on menus across the country.
Marianne LaCroix, executive director of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative, emphasized the significant impact of the lobster industry on Maine’s economy, stating that lobster is an integral part of the state’s identity. National Lobster Day serves as a reminder of Maine’s fishing contributions to the nation and highlights the importance of sustainable lobster fishing practices.
