Residents of Wales, Sabattus, and Litchfield rejected the $22.6 million budget for the Regional School Unit 4’s 2024-25 fiscal year. The votes for the third budget proposal were 374 in favor and 393 against. This is the second time voters have rejected a decrease from the originally proposed budget of $23.3 million. The most recent proposal aimed to balance educational quality while easing the impact on taxpayers. The increase to local taxes under the first proposal would have been over $1.4 million, but the rejected budget would have only increased taxes by $443,053. The school board will meet to propose a new timeline for a fourth referendum vote. Despite the rejection, Superintendent Katy Grondin sees the progress made towards passing the budget as a positive step for the community.
