Corinna’s Youth Secures Bull Moose, Inches Closer to Grand Slam

11-year-old Drake Henderson of Corinna, Maine, recently accomplished a major milestone in his hunting career by shooting a nearly 800-pound bull moose. This accomplishment brings him one step closer to achieving a grand slam, which involves harvesting a turkey, a bear, a moose, and a deer in the same year. Prior to his moose hunt, Drake had already successfully taken down a turkey and a bear.

Accompanied by his grandfather and several family members, Drake ventured out into Zone 5 on the first day of moose hunting but had no luck. However, on the following day, Drake heard two bulls and a cow before spotting the 796-pound bull moose that would become his trophy. Using his 260 Remington rifle, Drake shot the moose from 40-50 yards away while his grandfather followed up with more shots.

Drake expressed his excitement at finding the moose he had killed and plans to have a European mount done with its skull and antlers. He also intends to create fans and beard mounts for his turkeys, along with a rug made from his bear’s skin. Drake’s favorite part of the moose hunt was the thrilling experience of shooting and then locating the massive animal.

This successful hunt marks a special moment for Drake and his family, who have a history of being drawn for moose permits. Drake’s grandfather expressed his joy at being part of the hunt and looks forward to accompanying him on his upcoming deer hunt. When asked for advice for other moose hunters, Drake recommended getting a good guide.
