Israeli attacks in Lebanon have resulted in dozens of deaths, including the head of Hezbollah’s aerial unit. The attacks have prompted international calls for a ceasefire, with the US and France proposing a 21-day ceasefire plan. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected these calls and vowed to continue striking Hezbollah until all objectives are met.
The escalation of violence has forced more than 90,000 people in Lebanon to flee their homes. Israel’s offensive in Lebanon, with a focus on pushing civilians displaced by cross-border fire in the north to return home, marks the deadliest week of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in recent times. This comes after a period of relative calm in which exchanges of fire were limited to border areas.
Israel has also claimed to have carried out assassinations targeting Hezbollah’s military leadership, as well as launching air attacks that resulted in the deaths of senior commanders. There are concerns that Israel may launch a ground assault on Lebanon, with the army’s Chief of Staff indicating troops should be prepared for such a possibility.
The situation remains tense, with ongoing attacks, casualties, and displacement of civilians, as well as conflicting stances on a potential ceasefire. International efforts to de-escalate the situation continue, but the violence shows no signs of abating as both sides remain entrenched in their positions.
