Principals of the Farmington-based school district tackle new initiatives and challenges

Superintendent Christian Elkington has announced a ribbon-cutting and open house event for the Regional School Unit 9 District Office on October 15 at 3 p.m. The office, located at 227 Main St., moved into the former Holman Mission House in January 2024 and houses various departments including the superintendent, business and finance, special services, and school nutrition.

During a recent board of directors meeting, principals from various schools within the district shared updates. Cascade Brook School Principal Nichole Goodspeed expressed excitement about a new opportunity for fifth graders to work with Foster Career & Technical Education Center on digital media, culinary, and outdoor leadership programs. She also highlighted the positive impact of newly installed air conditioning at the school.

W.G. Mallett School Principal Tracy Williams discussed the expansion of the prekindergarten playground and efforts to form a new parent group after the disbanding of the PTA. James Black, Mt. Blue Middle School principal, talked about the recent restructuring of the open house due to a flood in the gymnasium and the positive impact of their new athletic director and interventionist, Shane Dudash.

Black also mentioned the success of the new Lego robotics and coding club at the school. Staffing challenges, particularly in finding substitutes, were also highlighted during the meeting. Elkington acknowledged the district’s efforts to hire key personnel, including special education resource positions, but noted the ongoing struggle to find qualified candidates.

The next RSU 9 board meeting is scheduled for October 8. The district continues to work on repairs to the gymnasium and address various challenges while striving to provide a quality education for students.
