A squirrel caused a power outage in downtown Bangor on Wednesday morning, affecting at least 501 customers at its peak. The outage swept through the area, with power being restored to most customers by 9 a.m. However, about 275 customers were still without power in areas from Cross Street to Hammond Street to Franklin Street to Central Street. Power was fully restored across downtown before 11 a.m.
Versant Power reported that a squirrel had come into contact with electrical equipment, leading to the outage. The incident highlights the potential impact of wildlife on power systems and the need for precautions to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The outage serves as a reminder for residents to be mindful of wildlife in urban areas and for utility companies to take proactive measures to protect infrastructure from animal interference. Versant Power worked quickly to restore power to affected customers and will likely be taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Despite the inconvenience caused by the outage, residents were understanding of the situation and grateful for the quick response by Versant Power to resolve the issue. As temperatures drop heading into winter, it is important for utility companies to be vigilant in maintaining reliable power systems to ensure the comfort and safety of customers.
